Google Chrome Crashes Due to Shockwave Plugin?

So hopefully most of you out there on Windows machines have installed different web browsers over the default Internet Explorer, if you haven't you should give Firefox or Chrome a try.

I'm mostly a Google Chrome user now for the past few years since it was released and for the most part am satisifed with its functionality and performance. Recently however I have been experiencing crashes and lockups that where caused by the Shockwave Plugin. A little Googling and found a solution that worked for me.

It seems that the conflict is caused by a plugin that is built into Chrome and the standalone Adobe Flash player that is required by web browsers such as Firefox. Chrome then tries to load both version up and causes the crash.

Here is the article over at Techlogon.com that explaines this in more detail and how to go in and fix the issue.

Keeping Joomla 1.5 Updated with Admin Tools

joomla logoJoomla 1.5 users have been without a quick an easy way to update the core Joomla framework with out manually updating. Joomla 1.6 and 1.7 adress this issue with this feature built in, but what about 1.5 users? Luckily the developers that brought use Akeeba have also created Admin Tools.

Admin Tools is described as "a true Swiss Army knife for your site. Our freely available Admin Tools Core will detect, notify you and painlessly install new Joomla! releases as they are made available, fix your files' and directories' permissions, protect your administrator directory with a password, change your database prefix, set a secure Super Administrator ID, migrate links pointing to your old domain on-the-fly and perform database maintenance, all with a single click." This description is about as good as it gets so there is no reason for me to further tout this component.

Joomla 1.7 is out!

joomla_logoThe developers at Joomla! just released their newest version of their content management system, 1.7.

With this latest version it seems the developers are really concentrating on making the update process as easy as it can be with "One Click" version updating. Currently this can be achieved with a compnent called Admin Tools by the creators of the best backup component Akeeba Backup. It's nice to see this finally becoming available as a core function however as many people struggle with this aspect of their site maintenance.

Another key piece of imformation publish was how the release cycle will be handled for Joomla! now. 1.6 and 1.7 are on a 6 month release cycle and 1.8 will be on a long-term support 15 month cycle. This is good news as 1.8 will be the natural choice to jump to from the current long-term release version of 1.5. I know that this is what I have been waiting on for my sites and for the site of my clients as I do not want to subject them to having to upgrade to the short-term release every 6 months.
